This study seeks to explore the formalistic analysis of illustrated works of fiction using a linguistic approach. The research primarily focuses on examples taken from 1980s America, utilizing the aforementioned method. The study aims to identify the various stylistic and narrative components present in these works, using theoretical frameworks such as Peirce's semiotic studies and Roland Barthes' intertextual discourse.
Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation, whereas intertextual discourse refers to the interconnectedness and shared meanings between different texts. These frameworks provide a thorough understanding of how visual and linguistic elements are used in illustrated works of fiction to convey meaning and create an aesthetic response in the audience.
The 1980s in America marked a pivotal moment in the graphic novel's history, with changes in content, form innovations, and media promotion. Works by artists such as Alan Moore, Dave McKean, Frank Miller, and Neil Gaiman, primarily written in the eighties, influenced the coordinates of this world. These works share common features, such as a dark worldview, realistic portrayals of classic superheroes, and attention to the psychological roots of villains. This approach led to the emergence of stylistic and narrative components in the expression of these graphic novels, which the research aims to identify and analyze using the provided intellectual apparatus.
The research methodology employed in this study is primarily descriptive and analytical in nature. The first part of the research involves reviewing the theoretical foundations of formalistic analysis, semiotics, and intertextual discourse. The second part involves explaining the formalistic criticism method and how it can be applied to examine illustrated works of fiction. The final part of the research involves selecting examples of works from the 1980s and analyzing them using the provided intellectual apparatus.
The study of these works by using a specific and formalistic method of criticism and analysis provides the opportunity for further reflection and the pursuit of the roots of future developments. The emergence of works with a lot of formal similarities in the form of graphic novels in the 1980s was a major factor behind the extensive developments in different art forms such as cinema and animation in the 1990s in America.
In essence, comic strips are a type of visual art that draws inspiration from illustrations. As per Scott McCloud's explanation, graphic fiction is comprised of visual elements and other images arranged in a specific sequence to communicate details and elicit an aesthetic reaction from the reader. Initially, these illustrated tales, or comic strips, were brief narratives presented through a series of images, often with a humorous tone, and were printed in the margins of newspapers. As the art of comics continued to evolve and take on new forms, such as comic magazines, comic books, and graphic novels, its unique features became more apparent.
