Abstract
In the sixteenth century, although Baghdad was under Sunni Ottoman rule, due to its proximity to Karbala and the significant presence of Shiʿas, it became a hub for the copying and illustration of Shiʿite books. In this cultural context, Muhammad ibn Sulayman Fuzuli Baghdadi translated Kashifi’s Rawdat al-shuhadaʾ into Turkish under the title Hadiqat al-suʿadaʾ. This work addresses the stories of the prophets, the Ahl al-Bayt, and specifically the event of Karbala, linking the tribulations of the prophets to ʿAshura. The widespread reception of this book led to the copying and illustration of multiple copies in local Baghdad workshops, yet few studies have analyzed its paintings. The present research examines the paintings of five manuscripts using codicological method. The main research questions are: What is the reason for the importance of this book in that historical period? Why are certain scenes repeated in the manuscripts? and What are the stylistic features of these paintings? Due to Baghdad’s geographical location, these manuscripts served as illustrated visitation guides (zīyārat-nāma). In these manuscripts, paintings such as the “Battle of Nahrawan” and “Abraham in the Fire” are repeated due to their semantic similarity to the event of Karbala. Stylistically, these paintings emphasize the contrast between good and evil through features such as a high horizon, breaking the frame, and depicting enemies in European clothing. Additionally, emphasizing the greatness of the Ahl al-Bayt in contrast to enemies is a prominent feature of these works.
