Any encounter with artworks from the past is inherently accompanied by "absence"; that is to say, for instance, the contemporary viewer lacks the "period eye" that once made the comprehension of Renaissance "istoria" possible. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and within the framework of the classical concept of istoria, this article aims to examine the pivotal role of experiencing "absence" in the understanding of historical artworks from the perspective of Derridean thought and its manifestation in contemporary digital art. Focusing on the project "Acqua ma non troppo" by Sommerer and Mignonneau, the present study seeks to demonstrate how Derridean concepts such as "différance" provide a suitable theoretical framework for analyzing digital art. The aforementioned work, utilizing the unique capabilities of the digital medium—including modular structure, auto-generative production, and inherent mutability—recreates the experience of absence. The findings indicate that this work, by destabilizing and suspending the referent, fragmenting the narrative, and perpetually dissolving meaning, objectively recreates the experience of absence. Furthermore, it utilizes absence as a strategy to recreate the experience of the "period eye." Since awareness of historical distance is itself considered a modern form of emotional catharsis, the sense of this loss can lead to a cathartic experience for the contemporary viewer. The research findings suggest that contemporary digital art, by employing the strategy of absence, not only does not hinder historical understanding, but by accepting this gap as an inseparable part of the contemporary experience, opens a new path for connecting with the past. Consequently, the novel approach of digital art has made it possible to redefine concepts such as "period eye" and "istoria" within the current cultural context.
