Environmental and urban graphics are place-dependent and related concepts that are used in urban spaces and the like. However, the overlap of their scope has always been an issue. In a way that many consider urban graphics to be merely a part of environmental graphics and in some cases environmental graphics are considered to be apart of urban graphics, this article aims to reinterpret urban graphics in relation to environmental graphics and to conduct a semiotic analysis of its functions, position, and hidden meanings. The main research questions are: What is the nature of urban graphics, what signs distinguish it from environmental graphics, and how does it function in the context of the city's semantic system, and what kind of experience of urban space does it create for citizens?
The research method of this article is qualitative and based on semiotic conceptual analysis. Instead of relying on field empirical data, the researcher has conducted a discursive and semiotic analysis of visual structures in the urban graphics system, relying on specialized texts, academic sources, and global case studies. Conclusion: The meanings conveyed by graphic elements are subject to codes that can be local, global, or even historical. Graphic signs in the city not only organize space, but also narrate it and have a relatively disciplined, networked, and functional system, and elements such as signboards, infographics, and route maps have characteristics such as standardization, repeatability in different locations, and integrated visual identity. Based on semiotic analysis, environmental graphics are often limited to controlled, subject-oriented, commercial, and sometimes commercial or decorative spaces.
